Hello

Hi Everyone

I am thrilled to be active at last on this blog as it is my first attempt at setting up my own blog. Having said that, my first posting was very succinct - it merely had a heading, so task 1 was to find a 'delete' button!

I work for Manukau Institute of Technology delivering various levels of IT within the community learning programme which is part of the Faculty of Business following our restructuring. We are classroom based but much of the course material is slowly moving to on-line although I suppose you could say at the moment that we have a blended learning environment.

On a personal note, I have lived in New Zealand for 6 years now, having made the move from the U.K. I live in Howick (a suburb of Auckland) with my husband and daughter who is currently 'studying' (although I see little evidence of this) at uni. We also have a Chinese girl living with us who is not a student but more like a lodger as she is a permanent resident here and has a full time job.

I am pleased to be back on the elearning course, having had to endure a forced six months break before I could rejoin and start this semester. This is my 5th paper and I have learned so much on this course that I often wonder if I had known that I knew so little at the beginning, would I have enrolled on the course! All part of the learning curve I suppose. As far as this paper is concerned, I can probably pick on one or two areas within my work area that could potentially be suitable for an evaluation project but I suppose I will identify them more fully as we progress through the course.

I look forward to sharing the learning with you all.

Ciao

Hilary

Hi Hilary

Blog looking good! It'll be nice to do a paper together again!

I'll email a response to your message - I did just slip away quietly!

How about evaluating the use of those Blackboard quizzes used in L2/3 Computing?? Or the discussion boards???

Have fun,

Yvonne

Hi Hilary,

sounds familiair, the steep learning curve. And I don't know how the education system is in the UK, but the whole NZQA, Unit Standards, Elements, etc. etc. was new to me, let alone the area of elearning. But I always get inspired by learning new things and 'meeting' people who do the same.

So let's make most out of this one.

Cheers, HElga

hello Hilary
very nice to meet you again. it was good to hear everyone's voices in the teleconference and now I can read more about you here. Is your role one of facilitating learning as people work on computers in the Community Learning Centres?

Good to see quite a few of you already know each other and are used to learning online.

Hi Bronwyn

Yes, I do facilitate learning within the classrooms and we have four levels of learning with our community learning programme, so a very diverse group of people. I am the Principal Facilitator so I am also involved in staff induction and training which is an area that I need to concentrate more on I think this year.

staff induction and training is a very rewarding area. In my experience working in that area, you have a learner group who have high expectations and restricted time. it can be a challenge to find the right level and mix of activities which help them learn new skills, while at the same time acknowledging their existing skills.
